I work at home but I have a degree and a lot of skills that someone cannot just learn overnight. I do legal proofreading, medical transcription, and business support/word processing for a few small corporations.
You want to stay at home with your children and work. The most obvious thing to do is to take in a couple extra kids as a home day care or private nanny.
I mean, even working at home, any other job is going to mean you will need someone to watch the kids so you can actually get the work done. Well then whats the point of staying home>?
While you are looking, write a book. Seriously. I know it may be no J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter) miracle, but I do have a friend that made some extra money writing a fantasy novel. He got about $8000 so far. That’s not too bad. Better than a year at a part-time minimum wage job. Or you could write children’s books. It’s worth a try. Look up publishers that publish the type of book you are writing, and send it in. My friend got a lot of rejections, but then one lucky day he got a “yes”. Also, an article on msn money “4 real jobs you can do from home” lists: a customer service call center in your home (companies direct call to your home and you answer right at home, pay starts at $8/hr…Alpine Access, LiveOps, Arise, West at Home); start a web business (web-based baby product business, for example.)As with any small business, it can help to draft a business plan. The U.S. Small Business Administration has a free business set-up guide on its Web site; Online auctions (ebay, for example, buy things wholesale and resell at close to regular price, i guess, though I’ve noticed unless you have something ultra rare, people just want a cheap deal, plus they get grumpy with high shipping costs). “Piece work” is an age-old concept that’s been updated by the Internet, most visibly on Amazon.com’s Mechanical Turk. The site pays people to perform tasks that computers can’t easily do, such as fill out opinion surveys, transcribe audiotapes and see whether items for sale have been correctly “tagged,” or classified. Other home-based businesses:
There’s not much high-tech about home-based businesses such as child care, house-sitting, dog walking and errand running. But classified advertising sites such as Craigslist and Expo can help you easily and cheaply connect with potential customers.
“And old-school businesses, if properly run, can provide a decent living,” said Steve Damato, who operates a licensed day-care center with his wife, Jodi, at their Elgin, Ill., home.
That’s a little info. I put the article link down there, or you can type “msn best stay at home jobs” into google, and the article should come up. Good luck

You are right to steer clear of these “send in money” jobs - they are scams.
You could look after someone else’s kids as well as your own?
Sell items on ebay? (beware, if you are buying things to sell you are a business and will need to register, pay tax etc.)
What sort of qualifications do you have? Could you tutor older children in anything?
I wouldn’t hold your breath as far as writing a book goes. The vast majority of books never get published, and I’ve seen some of the rejection letters people get. They are not nice at all.
How are your craft skills? A friend of mine used to make curtains at home, she was employed by a local fabric shop.
