I’m in college. Without anyone to watch over me I can never get myself to study or to work at home, all I do is procrastinate all day and watch TV/play video games. How do I kick myself in the butt and start working/studying?

Think about MONEY.
Honey, as soon as you figure out the answer to this question, let me know. I am a non-traditional student.. meaning I am older.. but the problems are the same.. after all, who WOULDN’T want to clean the bathroom instead of doing their ALGEBRA homework???
You have to get the notion that studying and doing well in college is something that you do because it helps you reach your goals, not because there is someone else there telling you what to do. Sit down and write down what your goals are in life and how doing well at college will help you reach your goals. Then post these goals somewhere that you can see them when you need motivation.
If you procrastinate it is often because you are afraid of failing. You need to work on that, and just get started with your work. You don’t have to do perfect work to start, but you keep working at improving your work.
Its often easier to do your work if you have a schedule of when to study rather than just wait around for the inspiration to come. I advise my students to treat school like a job and figure that you’ll spend 40 hours a week between going to school and doing homework. Now, many students don’t like to think of studying that much, but I think that you need to study at least 15 hours per week for a normal course load, and more when you have tests or projects due. So, you could schedule three or four hours per day for five days each week to study, and still have two nights per week that you don’t have to study (school should be a mix of study, social and student involvement).
Hope that this helps.
It all comes down to how bad do you want your degree? How bad do you want to keep the roof over your head? That’s my motivation.
I’m probably not the best one to give advice, as I’m in the exact same situation, but I’ve found a few things that work.
1.) I leave my house. I find a quiet coffee shop and I go there, alone, to study. It helps that I don’t have a laptop because if I did I know my time there would be wasted, too. So, I suggest you go minus your computer if you can.
2.) I get stranded. If I have class until noon and a meeting at 1:00, I go to the library or a coffee shop, etc., instead of going home. Then I can study for just that hour and not feel overwhelmed or bored.
3.) I split up my tasks into achievable chunks. If I know I have 300 pages of academic literature to read, I’ll take a nap. But, if I think, “I just have to read ten and then I’ll eat lunch.” and I forget about the other 290, I’ll end up getting more done.
4.) And, finally, it helps me to do something active and fun. Usually I surf the internet or watch movies, telling myself I’m “taking a break” when, in reality, I’m avoiding the fact that I’m becoming increasingly stressed by how behind I am. Instead, if I specifically set aside an hour or two to visit friends or go to the park, I have more motivation to be productive.
Hope that helps and good luck! I always thought it would be nice to hire myself a tutor who would tell me when to snack and when to read and make me do stuff. :o) It’s too bad we’re not in fifth grade anymore.
Write down ten things you would like to have, if you had the money to buy it.
Buy a two stage timer, set time for work, take a break.
Learn basic hypnosis to improve you study habits, Get a device to record into, just say the study work into it before a test. If you have an ipod, you can record info, then listen to it in class, taking the test….News Flash.
Fail a few classes and accumulate debt to the point that you need to go to school in order to get a better job to pay off your debt.
Seriously, you should study at the library or outside the home and make room in your house just for work, never play or sleep there. The couch/TV and bed should not be visible from your work space. And turn your phone off(if possible.)
It’s also a good idea to schedule play-time. Have movie-time on the weekend or evenings. Video games can be made into a social event, only play in the company of friends. Good luck, if you’re playing RPGs.
Money is a good goal, but difficult to attain even with a good education.
Sit down and write down your pryorities. Probably should be on seperate sheets of paper as they will change positions.
Now line them up where they can be seen.
Sell the TV. Stock the fridge with quick meals and water bottles.
Tell yourself if I fail to get xxxxxxxxx done I may starve for the rest of my life…….. Now go do it!
But remember one thing……..If you don’t put God first in your life…..you won’t have much of one.
